How to Choose the Right Pendant for Your Dining Table

How to Choose the Right Pendant for Your Dining Table

Your dining table isn’t just where meals are shared — it’s where stories unfold, homework gets done, and late-night conversations linger long after the plates are cleared. The right pendant light can completely transform this space, setting the mood and bringing a sense of balance and warmth to the room.

Choosing the right pendant might feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how I think about it when I’m helping clients find the perfect light for their home.

Size Matters

A pendant should feel proportionate to your table — not so large that it overwhelms, but not so small that it disappears. A good rule of thumb is to choose a pendant (or group of pendants) that’s roughly half to two-thirds the width of your table.

If you have a long table, two or three smaller pendants can look beautiful hung evenly across the length. For round tables, a single sculptural shade works best — something that anchors the space without feeling heavy like my Hive and Wave pendants.

The Right Height

As a general guide, hang your pendant so the bottom edge sits about 70–80cm above the tabletop. That height gives you enough light for dining and conversation, while keeping the glow intimate and flattering.

If your ceilings are higher, you can lift the pendant slightly; if they’re lower, bring it down a touch. What matters most is that it feels comfortable — you shouldn’t have to lean to see the person across from you.

Because each Skye Lightly shade is woven, the light naturally filters through the yarn, creating a gentle, diffused glow. It’s not harsh or glaring — just soft, warm light that invites people to linger.

Shape & Style

Lighting is as much about personality as it is about function.

  • The Wave collection has a sculptural, coastal energy — inspired by the movement of the ocean and perfect for homes that lean organic or modern coastal.

  • The Hive is timeless and versatile. It’s equally at home above a rustic timber table as it is in a clean, contemporary space.

  • The Orb adds playfulness and roundness — great for softening sharper architectural lines.

When choosing colours, think about how your light will interact with the materials around it. Natural and neutral yarns bring calmness and texture; bolder stripes or contrasting tones can add personality and rhythm.

Practical Details

A few finishing touches make all the difference:

  • Use a warm white LED globe to create that golden, inviting glow.

  • Dimmers are wonderful if you want to shift from dinner-party brightness to late-night mood lighting.

  • If your table moves or extends, center your pendant to the main eating zone, not necessarily the room.

  • In open-plan spaces, pick up on tones from your kitchen or living area — a small thread of colour repetition can subtly connect everything.

A Light That Brings It All Together

Dining rooms are about connection — between people, spaces, and stories. The right pendant doesn’t just illuminate the table; it becomes part of the memory-making that happens around it.
