The Meditative Art of Weaving Light
Music on, cup of tea, yarn in hand. This is how most of my days begin in the studio. The rhythm of weaving has become second nature now — looping, wrapping, pulling tight, over and over again — but it’s never something I take for granted. Each light shade I create takes anywhere from 4 to 25 hours, depending on the size and the design, and those hours are as much a part of the piece as the frame or the yarn itself.
The Process
Every shade begins with a steel frame (made locally here in Victoria), which I slowly bring to life with organic cotton yarn. It’s a simple act — wrapping yarn around wire — yet it’s also intricate, sculptural, and endlessly varied. Some days I’m chasing colour play, experimenting with bold stripes or blocks; other days I’m working with subtle, natural tones that blend softly into a room. No two pieces are ever quite the same, and that’s what I love about it.
The Meditation
For me, weaving is more than making a light — it’s a meditation. The repetition is calming, almost hypnotic, and there’s something deeply grounding about working slowly and deliberately. In a world that pushes us to move faster, buy faster, consume faster, I’ve found so much joy in slowing down. The weaving process allows me to sink into colour, texture, and rhythm, and that presence is woven into every strand of yarn.
Why It Matters
I often think of each light as a kind of time capsule — hours of care, patience, and quiet focus captured in one object. These aren’t throwaway items; they’re pieces designed to last, to be lived with, to become part of your home’s story. When you bring one into your space, you’re not just buying a light. You’re choosing something thoughtful, handmade, and created with intention.
An Invitation
I hope that the same contemplative joy I feel in weaving is what you experience when you live with one of my lights.
